Jakob Nielsen has written many books in his career as an accomplished usability guru, but I really like hsi book called Homepage Usability and design. Published in 2002, the book has many of the webs top sites broken down into pie charts of screen real estate and he goes into great deal the pros and cons of each site. This is truly a good way to understand the principles behind good converting sites.
