Blogging, RSS and PingsFebruary 20, 2006 4:14 am

I was never really sure but now I can say with confidence that i believe Google is tuned into the RSS feeds of the internet, and indexing pages syndicated throught the RSS. Nobody is linking to me on this site form what I know, yet 3 days after this blog was started I was indexed in Google an dranking for my blg title and my headlines. This means Google must have found me through my syndicated RSS feed. Another thing I noticed is that since Im hositng this blog on the subdomain of a major bloghost, I am instantly out off the sandbox in Google. I am already ranking for my name Dan Kavanaugh, as well as SEO Pulse. Im glad to know I dont need to have domains that are years old to initially start getting traffic for terms that drive traffic. Next I will test the effectiveness of a blog search engine submission service known as Pingomatic. This blog will serve many useful testing purposes it turns out :]

Ive been using this tool for months now that will take any page and strip it down to its basic html elements. The search engines such as google, yahoo and msn commonly analyze these factors when ranking you. Here are a list of details that seo meta tag analyzer will analyze about any of the documents in your site:

  1. Title Tag & Title relevancy to page content
  2. Description Tag and Description relevancy to page content
  3. Keyord Tag and its relevancy to the page content
  4. All the outgoing links that appear on your page in Anchor tags
  5. All the link text used on the page
  6. Keyword density of the document
  7. Phrase and multi keyword "phrase" density
  8. Img alt tag analysis
  9. Page length - how many words appear (too many or too few)
  10. Load time of the document

You can generate well formed documents that fulfil many of the basic seo requirements that search commonly engines look for. I use the tool as a general rule of thumb just to insure my meta tags are all in place and appropriate for the document. I also use the tool to parse urls to use in link building strategies. In other words you can copy 10 pages of google results onto a page and analyze that page with this tool to strip out all the urls in the search engine results without having to use a scraper. There are many more creative ways to use the tool that you may think of and dont forget to share your comments and personla experiences with it! :]

Backlinks: Analyzing & Building ThemFebruary 17, 2006 7:11 am

There are many factors that google considers when ranking sites. One I have known about for a while is age of site. The maturity of a domain meaning how many years its been online has some important weight in your ranking. This morning on Webmaster Radio I heard someone mention Cool Seo Tool and I quickly checked it out. This tool not only shows you the age of your competitons sites, but also breaks down many other important metrics. Backlinks, keyword density, pages in site, and many other cool numbers to see are built into this robust and quick web based utility. Check it out for yourself at http://www.webuildpages.com/cool-seo-tool/

SEO Books: Reviews and AuthorsFebruary 16, 2006 11:22 am

Jakob Nielsen has written many books in his career as an accomplished usability guru, but I really like hsi book called Homepage Usability and design. Published in 2002, the book has many of the webs top sites broken down into pie charts of screen real estate and he goes into great deal the pros and cons of each site. This is truly a good way to understand the principles behind good converting sites.

Keyword Selection 11:15 am

I have found that http://inventory.overture.com does not contain the real phrasings of searched terms on the respective serch engines. Although overture shows you the top search word cominations, they strip a "s" off the term if its plural even if its more searched with an s on the end. Another thing i dont like about overtures data is that the words are phrased in the correct order in which they are searched in real life Overture many times alphebetizes the keywords inside the phrase and in doing so obscure which keyword you perceive you should target.

For the reasons mentioned above and others, I would recommend anyone to seek out wordtracker.com to obtain lists of keywords to compete for. WordTracker offers current up-to-date databases of searched terms as they come from the users who enter them. Unobscured by language algorithms made to increase adspending, wordtracker proves time and again to be the true source of keywords for any seo project.

For 10 bucks a day, you have access to their wealth of data which easily will export to excel for sorting.

The current industry standard in web develpment is Macromedia’s Dreamweaver 8. It comes along with fireworks, its sister web graphics program and Flash, the animation software. With these 3 programs, you can make virtually any site on the web.

I find that some tools specifically targeted to SEO companies make it easier to deploy large amounts of pages more effectively for SEO purposes. One such program is XSite Pro. This unique software allows users to iterlink large amounts of pages within a ocmmon navigation structure which they can easily change in a jiffy. In addition to its streamlined site building power, it has tools in it to evaluate keyword density in your pages. Its 200 bucks and well worth it.

Traffic Equalizer is also a nice utility to spit out hundreds or thousands of templated doorway pages. This softwares templates can be heavily modified to change its signature in the search engine algorithms.
